The Awliyā’ of Allah in the Qur’an: Helpers, Near Ones, and the God-Conscious

🔹 Introduction: Nearness to Allah or Allah’s Nearness?

Throughout the Qur’an, the word "walī" is typically used in the sense of Allah’s closeness, protection, and support for human beings. However, in Sūrah Yūnus (10:62), with the phrase “Awliyā’ullāh” (Friends of Allah), it is the servants’ closeness to Allah that comes into focus. This marks a rare but striking shift in perspective within the Qur’an.

🔹 Conceptual Framework: What Do Walī and Awliyā’ Mean?

  • Walī (وَلِيّ) in Arabic means “one who is near, a supporter, protector.”

  • Awliyā’ (أولياء) is the plural form, meaning “those who are near, helpers.”

Thus, Awliyā’ullāh literally means “those near to Allah / Allah’s helpers.”
It is not merely a mystical friendship but a relationship of responsibility and commitment, as revealed through Qur’anic usage.

🔹 Who Are the Awliyā’ of Allah According to the Qur’an?

🟩 Yūnus 10:62–63 – The Foundational Definition:

“Behold! Surely the awliyā’ of Allah shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve.
They are those who have faith and are God-conscious (muttaqī).”

✅ Awliyā’ of Allah = Believers + God-conscious individuals
❌ No miracles, no lineage, no Sufi order, no cloaks, no dreams, no hidden knowledge.
The definition is clear: pious believers.

🔹 Walāyah (Spiritual Guardianship) Is Not Just Friendship — It’s a Responsibility

Today, the word "walī" is often romanticized as a term of mystical closeness (e.g., "Friend of God"). However, in the Qur’an, it carries a sense of duty and representation:

  • Anfāl 8:34
    “Its guardians (mutawallī) are none but the God-conscious.”
    ⟶ The guardianship of the Sacred Mosque is entrusted only to those with taqwā.

  • Muḥammad 47:7
    “If you help Allah, He will help you.”
    ⟶ Walāyah is based on mutual loyalty and active participation.

🔹 What Does It Mean to “Help Allah”?

Obviously, Allah does not require help in a literal sense. But His religion, His justice, and His commands are established on earth through the actions of God-conscious believers.

  • Āl ‘Imrān 3:52–53: The disciples said, “We are Allah’s helpers.”

  • Ṣaff 61:14: “O believers! Be helpers of Allah.”

  • Ḥajj 22:39–41: Assistance is promised to those who uphold places where Allah’s name is remembered.

These verses show that Ansārullāh and Awliyā’ullāh are those who take initiative, who struggle, who act.

🔹 Surprising Revelation: Even Satan Has Awliyā’

The Qur’an also mentions that Satan has his own allies/walīs:

“Satan incites his awliyā’ (allies) to fight you.” (Āl ‘Imrān 3:175)
⟶ Some people serve as Satan’s helpers. This proves that the term walī denotes an active role, not just a passive connection.

🔹 The Shadows of Narrations: Fabricated Sufi Concepts

Although the Qur’an defines the Awliyā’ of Allah as God-conscious believers, various hadiths and traditional texts present mystical definitions:

“They are those who, when seen, remind one of Allah.”

“Even prophets and martyrs envy them.”

⟶ These characterizations are not found in the Qur’an. Hence, the term awliyā’ has been mystified to create a spiritual aristocracy in society.

🔹 Conceptual Collapse: Walī ≠ Friend

  • The word “dost” (friend) comes from Persian dust/dostān, implying affection or emotional companionship.

  • However, the Qur’anic word walī means protector, supporter, and one who takes responsibility.

Using “friend” to translate Allah as Walī distorts the concept and undermines tawḥīd (Divine Unity).

“He has not taken a son, nor does He have any partner in dominion, nor out of weakness does He need a helper.” (Isrā 17:111)
⟶ This verse affirms that Allah needs no support. Translating walī as “friend” implies a human-centered misreading.

🔹 Conclusion: Who Are the Awliyā’ of Allah?

📣 Habibullah demek ŞİRKTİR Allah SEVGİLİ Edinir mi?         Sevgili, en sevgili, çok sevgili, double sevgili… Türkçeye zimmetlenmiş karşılığı “habib”. Allah’a zimmetlendirilen karşılığı ise “habibullah”. Yani “Allah’ın sevgilisi”.     Habib kelimesi lugatta, kökeninde sevgi barındıran başka manalara da geliyor.
