Stinginess is Blasphemy: He Who Does Not Spend Is Not Considered Grateful

✒️

The connection between "infak" (charitable giving) and "şükür" (gratitude) is directly established in the Quran and is logically very striking.

What is surprising is this: According to the Quran, true gratitude is spending what God has given you for His sake — in other words, it is infak.

1. Şükür = The Proper Use of Blessings

Most people perceive gratitude as merely saying "Alhamdulillah." However, the Quran emphasizes that gratitude is not just a matter of words, but an act of using a blessing correctly.

  • Etymological root: The word "şükür" comes from the root that signifies the visible effect of a blessing. In Arabic, a camel that is full and producing more milk is called a "shakirah" because the food it was given has yielded a tangible result. This shows that gratitude is an action.

2. The Gratitude-Giving Relationship in the Quran

Surah Saba, Verse 13

"O family of David! Act in gratitude (اعملوا آل داوود شكرا)."

Here, it doesn't say "be grateful," but "do good as an act of gratitude." This means gratitude is expressed through action.

Surah Bakara, Verses 172-177

In this passage, God reminds people of His blessings, then mentions charitable giving: "...Spend from the provisions We have given you..." This structure establishes a clear chain of "blessing → giving."

3. Why is Giving a Form of Gratitude?

Because:

  • Using what God has given you in the way He desires is an affirmation, not a denial, of His blessing.

  • The person who gives declares that they are not the true owner of the wealth.

  • Sharing is a way of saying, "My Lord gave to me, and through this, I am reaching out to others." This is a practical act of praise.

4. A Striking Example: Both Ingratitude and Giving Start in the Heart

The Quran presents the opposite of gratitude as disbelief/ingratitude (kufr) (Surah Bakara, Verse 152).

  • Gratitude: Using a blessing correctly (like giving).

  • Ingratitude: Hiding, hoarding, and not sharing a blessing.

Therefore, a person who hoards their wealth is not just stingy, but also ungrateful.

  • Generosity = Gratitude

  • Stinginess = Ingratitude

5. A Powerful Summary

Gratitude is not just saying "May God be pleased with you." It is the act of transferring what God has given you to God's other servants.

Therefore, the one who gives is essentially saying, "My Lord, I have used what You gave me in the way that it deserved."
