“Forgetfulness” in the Qur’an and God’s Unforgetfulness
🧩 “Forgetfulness” in the Qur’an and God’s Unforgetfulness: The Secret of Divine Memory
🔍 Introduction:
In the Qur’an, it is striking that God is described as “never forgetful” (Maryam 64), while humans are called “forgetful” (Taha 115). What does this contrast mean? If God does not forget, what does this reveal? Why do humans forget? Is forgetfulness merely a cognitive weakness, or is it a deliberate detachment?
🧠 1. Forgetfulness in the Qur’an: More Than a Memory Issue
Taha 115: “We had already taken a covenant from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found no determination in him.”
Kahf 63: “I forgot [about] the fish—and none made me forget to remember it except Satan.”
Insan 29: “We guide whomever We will to the straight path. Whoever forgets and turns away—we will [in turn] forget them.”
In the Qur’an, “forgetting” often means willful neglect, disregard, or devaluation—not simply a failure of memory.
Thus, it is not so much a cognitive flaw as it is a moral attitude.
📚 2. Does God Forget? No. But...
Maryam 64: “Your Lord is never forgetful.”
Taha 126: “Thus it is: Our signs came to you, but you forgot them. So today you are forgotten in the same way.”
Here, being “forgotten” is not literal but metaphorical—it is a form of divine retribution. God does not forget, but because a person has neglected what they should have remembered, God treats them as if they were forgotten.
🧬 3. The Link Between Forgetfulness and Responsibility
The Qur’an makes clear that humans have a duty to remember:
“Dhikr” (remembrance) is one of the Qur’an’s central functions (A’raf 205, Taha 124).
The Qur’an itself is called “Dhikr”—a Reminder—because humans are forgetful, and revelation serves to awaken memory.
Satan’s main tactic is to induce forgetfulness and lead people into heedlessness (Kahf 63).
🔄 4. The Rememberer Succeeds, the Forgetful Loses
A’la 9: “He who remembers and accepts admonition will succeed.”
Hashr 19: “Do not be like those who forgot God, so He made them forget themselves.”
Here, God “making them forget” means allowing them to lose awareness of their own selves, their essence, and their purpose—not as a punitive act but as a consequence of their own detachment.
🌌 Conclusion:
In the Qur’an, forgetfulness is not portrayed as a trivial brain function but as a moral vulnerability. Remembrance, on the other hand, is the foundation of faith and responsibility. God does not forget because He is fully aware and sovereign over all things. Humans forget; hence, they are given scripture, prophets, and constant reminders (dhikr). The essential question is:
“Do you wish to forget—or to remember and be set free?”
